The technology behind thermal imaging was originally developed for military applications. Thermography uses invisible infrared energy to allow users to look through smoke and fog and even see in total darkness. Infrared refers to that part of the spectrum that is just above the spectrum that we call visible light. Objects either give off or reflect infrared or heat energy. Digital Thermography is the science and technology of detecting that energy and making it visible to human vision.
Recent advances in thermographic imaging have brought this remarkable technology to a wide range of industries. Fire fighters use thermal imaging to quickly locate fires and the heat signatures of victims in smoke filled buildings. Law enforcement agencies use them for surveillance and utility companies use them to inspect power lines. Building inspection and engineering firms find thermal imaging invaluable in locating and assessing conditions that before were difficult and costly to address.

Thermal imaging cameras that record both thermal and regular digital pictures are now being used by some property damage restoration companies. Many restoration companies have not incorporated thermal imaging into their restoration work because of the significant expenses involved in purchasing them and the training and experience needed to operate them.
Before these cameras were available water damaged structure had to be found with hand held instruments alone which is time consuming and prone to error. Restoration companies that do use Thermography have a large advantage in being able to more quickly locate water damaged walls, floors, and ceilings with accuracy and certainty that is difficult to do with hand held instruments alone. Water can quickly move to unexpected areas which are not visible to the naked eye making it difficult to find all of the affected areas. These areas show clearly when scanning walls and floors visually with thermal imaging cameras. The restoration process as a whole is faster and more thorough virtually eliminating errors and mistakes. The final drying results can be documented through pictures giving the owners and insurance companies’ peace of mind that the structure is truly dry. The documentation available in this approach may times makes the insurance claim process much smoother as well.
