The holidays are here, and it's time for enjoyment, not for trips to the emergency room or a visit from the fire department. Roughly 8,700 people will have to go to the emergency room and 400 fires will be started from Christmas trees. Those fires will result in a whopping $15 million in property loss and damage. In ALL-CLEAN USA's efforts to keep you safe this year, please remember...
IN THE KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM... 1) Keep sharp knives away from children. 2) Inspect china and crystal for chips and cracks. Also check and make sure they are dishwasher safe. 3) Thaw meat according to the label. 4) Remove pots and pans from the stove when done. 6) Always have a first aid kit on hand. They are inexpensive and useful. 5) Make sure flower arrangements are non-toxic. Some plants can be toxic to children and pets.

CHECK YOUR FIREPLACE... 1) Have your fireplace and chimney inspected for cracks and soot build up. Make sure your flue is open before lighting a fire. 2) Do not put Christmas tree limbs in the fireplace. The limbs burn hotter and will build up soot. Too much soot build up can cause a fire in the chimney. 3) Do not burn wrapping paper in the fireplace. This can cause a flash fire and burn intensely.
AND FOR THE CHRISTMAS TREE... 1) Artificial trees should have a “fire resistant” tag. This does not mean it will not catch fire. It does mean it will resist burning and extinguish quickly. 2) Do not block exits with your tree. 3) If you choose a live tree, cut 6" off the bottom of your tree to insure it gets the water it needs. Remember to water it on a regular basis so it will not dry out. 4) Keep your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and heaters. Heat will dry the tree out faster. 5) Keep your tree out of high traffic areas. Small children love to pull and climb on the tree. 6) Check all decorations. Consider placing breakable decor higher so children can't reach them. 7)Inspect your lighting, inside and outside. Do not over load the outlets. Check extension cords. 8) Turn off lighting when you are not at home or sleeping. 9) Learn how to use a fire extinguisher and know where it is located. Not all extinguishers work the same way. 10) Do not use candles on a tree.

 TIS' THE SEASON FOR CHARITY
Charity is so important and tends to be more prevalent during the Christmas season. I think sometimes amidst working, holiday parties and making plans for the holiday season, charity can sometimes be forgotten by some.
Charity is all around us. Visit the mall and behold the red bucket from the Salvation Army. We all have a dollar or two or maybe some change we can spare. A little goes a long way!
A favorite part of Christmas for me is Toys for Tots. I love seeing the bikers, who participate annually, line I630 in Little Rock headed to Toy Hill at War Memorial Stadium. I think it's maybe the only time you can catch a "biker" - tattoos and all - with a teddy bear strapped to his Harley.
Amidst the gift buying and holiday parties this season, try and make charity a part of it. Donate your time and/or your money. Need a gift idea? If you know someone who has it all, make a donation to a charity in their honor. With that said, I have included a few of my favorite charities. Merry Christmas!
HUMANE SOCIETY OF PULASKI COUNTY - my personal favorite. You can help the HSPC by making a donation or purchasing a 2008 Day Planner, a monthly calendar filled with photos of pets from individuals like Congressman Vic Snyder, famed gardener P. Allen Smith and Governor Mike Beebe. They are available at www.warmhearts.org.
FRIENDS OF THE MALVERN ANIMAL SHELTER - an animal rescue group based out of the Malvern/Hot Springs area. Please consider an animal for Christmas if you live in that area. Call 501-337-9380 for information on adopting.
CLAY COUNTY ANIMAL RESCUE - another animal rescue group. An individual operates a shelter for all types of animals on his family farm and uses his private funds. They have great pure breed dogs such as labs, collies and golden retrievers. If you are in the northeast and need an animal for Christmas please consider CCAR. www.ccanimalrescue.com
U.S. MARINE CORPS TOYS FOR TOTS -The primary goal of Toys for Tots is, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, to deliver a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. www.toysfortots.org.
ANGEL TREE - a program that reaches out to children of inmates and their families. www.angeltree.org
Until next time,
