 Categories of Water

Written by Kyle Johnson,
 Operations Manager, NW Arkansas

Some people think water is water. Well, it is not always true in water restoration. Water damages can be placed into three categories: category 1, 2 and 3. These various categories are based on the source, time and temperature of the water. The categories of water are defined in the IICRC S500 and IICRC S520.

Category 1 - The source is clean and does not have the risk of a hazard if consumed by humans. This category is also referred to as “clear” water.

Examples are: water from an empty sink, rain water from a hole in the roof, bathtub overflow and a water tank supply line leaking. Notice the water does not come in contact with any chemicals, structure, debris or any other contaminate(s).

Category 2 - The source starts with a degree contamination and could possibly harm humans if it is consumed. This category is referred to as “gray” water.

Examples are: water from a washing machine, water passing through building materials, water from a dishwasher and water from a toilet which my contain urine.

Category 3 - The source is highly contaminated and will cause serious illness and possible death if consumed by humans. This category is referred to as “ black” water.

Examples are:  a sewer line back up or a burst in which outside water (rising water/flood) comes into a house or business. Building materials like carpet and pad should be removed when it is a category 3 water loss.

Time and temperature are the factors for water restoration versus having to be destructive. Time will change a category 1 water loss to a category 2 in a 24- hour time period. The longer the water sits, the higher the category no matter the source of water.

The higher the temperature the faster microorganisms in water will grow. It will not take long for mold to start growing with the right food source, lack of light, moderate temperature and stagnant air.

Response time is critical when it comes to water restoration. If you have questions concerning water restoration, please contact one of our offices.
